For those who have any familiarity with the Bible, that name conjures up the image of a spoiled young man who was given an “amazing technicolor dream coat”, nearly killed by his brothers, sold into slavery, accused of rape, thrown into prison, appointed as Pharaoh’s right-hand man…and who eventually forgave those same murderous brothers.
That guy is considered a hero.
But he’s not who I’m referring to at the moment.
I was reading in the gospel of Matthew this morning about Jesus’ earthly step-daddy…and I found myself gaining a newfound appreciation for him. Granted, this Joseph doesn’t have the Hollywood-esque storyline of the “Prince of Egypt”. But that doesn’t diminish his importance in the course of human history. This Joseph, although his footprint in scripture is pretty small, made an impact on all humanity…simply by playing his role as protector for Mary and Jesus.
Which brings me to the point of this post.
To the honorable veterans of this nation: THANK YOU!!
Thank you for playing your role…a role that is vital to the protection of countless people. Like Joseph, many of you may not have a big individual footprint that can be seen by everyone. But please know that the world would be a much emptier place without you.
To all of our brave military men and women…I salute you, and may God richly bless you!
